The question about which are the best places to shop for stuff for home interiors in Bangalore has surfaced in multiple discussions with friends, family and clients. Some may say that I am about to reveal a trade secret, however I am a firm believer that knowledge should be free … and available for people to make informed decisions. Money should be made from ideas and implementation of those & not from information.
Before we dwell deeper here are some first principles
1. What are given below are my views on the best places that I know of.
2. I am not soliciting business for or from these folks.
3. You might end up with better places to shop than these….if you do then let me know as well 🙂
Okay….back to the meat then
Shutters (ready made):
For wardrobe & Kitchen: Have found Indoline to be the best in quality, variety & value (= cost/ quality). These are available from most Kitchen & Furniture vendors in Bangalore. Huzafia Decor on Residency road is the Bangalore dealer for Indoline.
The negative is that these come from Nasik and take a min of 15 days for delivery. If one is pressed for time then Elenza comes a close second. They have a factory in Bangalore, hence can deliver quickly, also have a wider colour choice.
Carcass
(boxes for kitchen & wardrobe cabinets): Anything works here…Elenza, Indoline, local make all are ok
Wood (Ply, Laminate etc.):
Kanakpura Road (opposite GR Pinnacle) has multiple shops. All of these folks are distributors and offer good rates (I might write about rates in a later post)
Hardware:
Before you buy hardware make sure you visit the Hettich showroom at Raheja Arcade in Koramangala (opposite Forum). A trip there opens your eyes to what all has been achieved in the Hardware world and what you should be using for your needs. Best places to shop for hardware are Ismail (good rates), Parmanand (Good variety) – both on Commercial Street (CS), CS has multiple other shops in the bylanes & crevices which I have not explored.
Closer to South Bangalore, Masterpiece (opposite Big Bazaar Jayanagar 9th Block) has good variety (rates are a ?). Also Razzle (Opposite Sonata on RV Road) has good variety (especially Handles & Aluminium profiles etc.), rates are ok ok.
Number of folks choose to go to City Market for Hardware, however shopkeepers there (i felt) are not trustworthy and might take you for a ride.
Electricals, Light Fittings Etc.:
For Lights the sasta and tikaau (meaning offering good value) place is Priya Electricals in Jayanagar 4th Block Market (Shops opposite Citibank). While Priya also keeps all other electrical stuff (Fans, Geysers, Chimney, Hobs etc.) sometimes have found Anupama Electricals (Opposite Khazana Jewellery in Jayanagar 4th Block) offering better rates.
If you want some of the best lights in town and care two hoots about the price then go to Trisha (Shanthi Nagar), they import lights from nearly all over the world and have a good variety.
I have seen Kapoor Lights, LightsPro etc. etc. but still found the above folks to be better.
Wooden Flooring & Panelling:
This is one area (at least) where Hometown offers good choice, though you might get a better price outside.
There is specialized flooring and panelling material available (for example bamboo, shell, coconut shell wood panelling, leather floors etc) , however this comes from niche players who do not have a showroom in Bangalore but can supply.
Also very good quality Wallpaper is available nowadays (Hometown has this). This offers greater variety (than paint) for wall textures and is quicker to lay.
Kids Furniture:
ChildSpace (Childspace.co.in) is by far the best, sometimes a little steep in price, however it beats all in quality and finish.
Sanitaryware:
Galleria on Indiranagar 100 feet road has very good variety, they import stuff from all over, also they also have a price to match.
For standard desi stuff at regular rates Build mart (buildmart.co.in) on BG Road & Hometown have all that is there in the market…one stop shop
Kitchen & Bathroom slabs:
This is not your run of the mill granite and marble stuff that I am talking about which is amply available in the Marble Market on BG Road.
There are speciality acrylic kitchen and counter tops that are available in Bangalore from Hanex (Hanexusa.com). They have a dealer close to dairy circle (before Kajaria Ceramics next to Forum) where you can check it out.
Furnishings, Upholstery etc.:
Floating Walls (floatingwalls.in) in Jayanagar has everything that one might need at a price that is approx 30% lower most other big names in the market.
This is all that I can think of at this time of the night (yaaawn!!!) will add to the post if I remember anything that I missed out. As mentioned earlier if you find a good place for shopping for Home interiors ….. do let me know and I will add to the list (with due credits to you of course)

Amit: There are local vendors in Bangalore like Balaji Panel Craft…however their quality & finish in Membrane is not as good. If you are going for laminate shutters then going for a local vendor will be ok.

Mohan – I would definitely recommend UPVC – Based on the specifics it would cost a bit more than wood (Good Quality) and much higher than powder coated Aluminium, however it would give you incomparable noise reduction, water proofing and ease of installation & long term use.

Now my question – I need some idea for false ceiling to hide the roof beam. Actually my builder has given me 3 toilets and I remove one which was joined with living room. It increases my living room size by more than 5 ft. but now the problem is that roof is hanging from that side which I want to hide. Can you help with some idea?

You have mentioned Elanza and Indoline for readymade shutters.
1) Are the ready made shutters – Marineply/[Laminate-Edge Banded] or MDF /[membrane|laminate].?
2) Where can I find Elanza stores in Bangalore. I googled , but couldn't find any clues.
3) Do you know any factory in bangalore who can do the edgebanding /hot press laminate on Marine ply shutters.
4) Do you know any place where I can get the Ducopaint done on Marineply shutters ?
These are ready made shutters – both marine ply and Membrane. Your local modular kitchen vendor will be able to get you these.
The factories do not entertain retail vendors (for edge banding) – hence you will need to go through the modular kitchen vendors again for this
Any good painter will be able to do duco paint on shutters.

I do not recommend custom built sofas as the finish is not up to the mark. Dining Tables can be made on site but you will still need to buy chairs from the market – rather buy the whole set as the cost will work out better.
Recommended places to buy sofas in Bangalore are the regular suspects – Lifestyle, HomeStop, Simply Sofas, @Home, Evok, Casa Modern, HomeTown etc.

As you indicated in one of your blogs, I actually did start off with a survey of the "regular suspects"! The problem I found was that it's difficult to balance choice of budget, style, quality/finish and cover/color. Most don't offer any choice of change (color/cover esp, which hits the most due to home color theme) – it's just whatever's available..
Enquiring around, I found some "carpenters" who claim that they know some "workshops" where the sofas are made that end up in some of these "branded showrooms" at a much bigger price. I'm yet to visit some such place to see and check for myself, though.
Similarly, for cots. An observation was you can get a cot (or maybe even sofa) custom built with better materials (ply/wood compared to mdf/particle wood) for the same price with (nearly?) the same finish, and some.. (head cushions, styling, lighting, storage boxes)
For dining sets, yes, getting then custom built, esp. the chairs, that match the styles of readymades looks difficult. My pref. is a good styling with steel, glass, and may be some wood. So I may settle for the off-the-shelf ones.
The research, however, continues.. there's soo much to learn and figure!

Doing the cots onsite is fine as one can get the finish as well as a match with the room decor. Sofas is still a no – no.

Really a very useful and a must visit site for what you call "Freshers"… also it gives us a btter understanding what not to use. But getting a good carpenter is also a challenge, as mostly the couple of Carpenter have talked take the whole order.. Any recommendation on that front ?
Agree…Even for me working in the field getting good carpenters in Bangalore is a challenge.
If the guy is good you probably (unfortunately) will need to agree to his demands.

Look through the catalogs of Merino, Century, Greenlam etc. Any good plywood dealer will have these. Whiteboard laminate as well as blackboard paint is available in the market for making writing surfaces.

Building a house for own and rented too . I have already done the wardrobe except the shuttering and drawers…and kitchen carcass with Andra slab ….. don't know if that is the name ( a concrete slabs of 3/4 of an inch thick). Now I have to do shutters ,drawers for both kitchen and wardrobe …. Carpenter asking us to use pine wood for these in the rented houses . Is it advisable …. What r the things I need to look at?
I don't recommend Pine Wood as it does not last. I would suggest going with any cheaper brand of BWR Ply

I am advised that kota stone carcasses would be the best material for kitchen under counter cabinets and can be cleaned easily and are almost termite free.

And Yes while Hettich or Hafele fittings can be used in kota stone carcass kitchens however since the shutters rest on a wooden frame (as the carcass is stone) these kitchens don't last very long

100% acrylic shutters are mostly imported. However Acrylic finish shutters are readily available. These are fine for the kitchen. You may try Evershine, Indoline, Action Tesa etc.

You should check with the any of your local modular kitchen shops. For direct buyers purchase directly from the manufacturer is fraught with sales and after sales issues…hence best to source through your local vendor.

Hydraulic lifts come by weight capacity of the door. The hardware shop will be able to guide you based on the weight of the door you have – the lift itself will also have the weight capacity mentioned.

Nandita your blog is very helpful. I would like to ask about what can be done about bath cabinets. Our builder is providing us with the sanitary ware and I find that the cabinets made by the carpenters do not reflect the same styling if you buy it from the stores. Unfortunately one of the stores we visited said that they do not sell cabinets separately. On the other hand if we choose to take the whole package from a store then we get a minimal credit from the builder and lose out on money, which is not desirable at this point of time. Is there any way out of this? Will no store sell the cabinets of the brand separately?
The stores sell complete sets only. You may want to talk to your builder and ask him to do the fitting according to your specs and charge the delta extra. Most small builders (not the big ones) in Bangalore are fine to do that.
Also very good quality of stuff can actually be made on site as well

Buy from a good store closest to you that offers competitive rates, else you will end up paying (in cash or kind) a lot for the transportation and general logistics. Just ensure that the wood is ISI marked and of the right grade. For laminates go with known brands such as Merino, Greenlam etc.

Each shop has a different collection & its just a 1.5 KM stretch hence would recommend a walk to window shop and then decide.
If you are looking for someone with the largest range then try MCI (on BG Road) or HMG (Near Lalbagh)

Hettich at Raheja Arcade is now closed, went searching for it couple of days back, as they have not removed from map yet. Now, there's one opposite Umerkot Residency(https://goo.gl/maps/7ZDrVahfPiQ2) in Koramangala 4th Block(they have not placed this Hettich in map yet)

For Kitchen shutters Duco (auto paint) is not recommended as the kitchen is a hi use space & the paint may chip off at the edges. For Wardrobe/ crockery unit etc. shutters Duco is fine

Hi Nandita. Firstly a big thank you for all the information. Your blog led me to Indoline and they are offering kitchens and wardrobes that are very reasonably priced. However they will not provide a written warranty. Do you think it would be safe to go with them?
If you know the vendor supplying the Indoline kitchen and is someone to be trusted then you may go ahead. Modular furniture does need some after sales support hence you should be sure that the vendor will support as and when needed.

There are a couple of shops on the 11th main Jayanagar 9th block (Aurobindo road) where you can check. Also Homestop/ Lifestyle/ and @Home has a decent range. Buying the right murals does take quite a bit of running around…even for me

Acrylic laminates are not available from the regular brands (Merino, Century, Greenlam). Almost all Acrylic laminates currently are unbranded imports, except maybe Euro. Please try at the Euro showroom on Mysore road

I have not used Spacewood hence cannot comment. Have used Indoline and have found them to be good. If your Kitchen is self managed (not maid managed) and you are not a rough user then membrane/ mdf shutters for the Kitchen are fine. For rough use I would recommend ply + laminate

I am a resident of Kanakapura road, Bangalore and I am looking for factory-made wardrobes, TV wall unit, dining table and sofa sets. I heard that a plywood material based wardrobe suits my budget. But when I tried to find a good deal within my budget on online portals like Pepperfry, I see that they charge around Rs. 21000/- for just an Engineered wood wardrobe of size 6 ft. * 5.25 ft. I could not be content with this deal and am looking to know if I can get a wardrobe made of better material like Plywood for the samee price as also other furnitures made of better materials like Rubberwood, Sheesham Wood, etc., and so I contacted a carpenter to know the rates. But he seems to be charging 1000 per square feet to make wardrobes with Centurian Gold kind of plywood which works out to Rs. 31,500/- for the same size wardrobe made of engineering wood, that is offered in Pepperfry. I don't know about this brand Centurian Gold that the carpenter told me, as there are 100's of different plywoods with different price ranges. Can you please help me with some good furniture dealers in and around kanakapura road, Bangalore who can possibly help me with factory made furnitures of better materials for the same price as that of furnitures that are currently available on online portals which are mostly of less durable/quality wood such as Engineeing wood or Particle Board. Carpentry costs as well as material cost for woodwork are generally high in Bangalore compared to some other metros like Delhi & Mumbai. Based on your query above and your preference for good quality wood (no MDF/ Particle Board) you should get your wardrobes made by a carpenter – what you will get from any furniture shop will not match up.

saint gobain white/colorless with white wall lacquered glass as
splashback. But want to put this colored glass block as part of it.

I was thinking if they can be painted over the lacquered glass.

These glass blocks are readily available in the market. You may check with any glass vendor in Bangalore. That said, such blocks are usually used for partitions and they look good only if there is light passing through them. I don't know how they will look as part of a backsplash. I'd encourage you to look at border tiles – either regular glossy ones or glass tiles

We want to have a big pooja unit right next to our TV unit. We and our designer tried designing looking for various type of doors for our pooja unit but all look odd.. I was browsing and saw sliding panel curtains in japanese style. They are light in color but bright and I think will look good for the pooja unit. Do you know if they are available anywhere in bangalore. Also do you think it will look good? Any door of glass/wood/brass looks too heavy for the living.
You will get these ready made from online stores (Pepperfry, Urban Ladder etc.)
It would be unwise for me to comment based on limited information and without having seen the place. Ideally your designer should visualize and recommend…that is really what differentiates a designer from a carpenter. Please expect more from the designer when you have appointed one.
That said there are limitless ways in which you can construct a pooja unit door – it can even be CNC cut and painted based on custom design/ requirements.

Rubberwood is fine t use for cots. Nowadays Rubberwood sheets are available and you can use those. Else regular Plywood would also suit fine

Handles are mostly unbranded – even the branded ones are being sourced from the same vendors. If you are brand conscious the you may check out Hettich, Ebco or Hafele

Custom made will need volumes, hence not really an option for a single home. You may try at Razzle or Rankas on RV Road opposite Bangalore hospital – they have good variety. You may also check online – especially for sourcing the knobs.
in a kitchen and wardrobe being made at site, should i go for removable skirting or fixed? how can anything enter inthat area when its fully closed? in general which type of skirting ispreferred(granite/quartz for kitchen or ply or pvc). TIA
If you are doing the kitchens and wardrobes on site you may go for a fixed skirting. You may use either ply with laminate or granite for the Kitchen and Ply with laminate for the wardrobes
Hi Nandita.. I really like one laminate for our kitchen backsplash. Can we put the laminate directly in the tile area and then cover it with toughened glass? Will it work? or it can't be done? I am thinking we can cover 4" of backsplash using quartz and glass over laminate in rest of the area. Thanks.. please let me know if you see any issue with the same
The gap between the glass and the ply is likely to gather fungus/ moss over time, I would hence not recommend it.
Glass backsplashes look great in modular kitchen showrooms but are really not practical unless you are ok with an ornamental kitchen that is rarely used.
If you are extremely keen on the laminate backsplash then mount 12 mm BWP ply on the wall and paste the laminate on it without the glass, ensure that the wall is 100% flat & you use waterproof adhesive. This too will spoil over time but then you would enjoy it while it lasts + you can change it 3 years later to something else
I have MDF with membrane as my kitchen shutters. There are shutters placed on either side of the chimney. I have noticed that the membrane has started to peel off next to the chimney. Pls suggest how to handle the areas prone to heat exposure. Tks

Good quality membrane/ MDF ideally should not peel off before 7-8 years.
You can get the side panels replaced with Ply having matching laminate.
