Photogrpahs look good, can you share the details on material used for the shutters for the kitchen as well as sliding wardrobe. How do you open the sutters above the sliding door wardrobe as i dont see any handles.

Kitchen is in Marine Ply carcass & membrane shutters.
Sliding Wardrobe is in Marine Ply + Laminate + Glass + Aluminium – Advise you don't try this at home without some expert advise 🙂
No handles!! – well that is a secret…you will see no handles in any of the lofts :))

Your posts have been very informative. I am planning to go in for modular kitchen in my new flat. I have the following queries –
1. In my current accomodation the kitchen has been done in pre-lam particle board from Bhutan Board [both carcass n shutters] but I dont see any of the problems that u have mentioned regarding usage of PB for the kitchen. Even under the sink unit where water keeps dripping off and on, I dont see the either the board losing shape or the laminate peeling off. Was wondering – is it because of the brand or something else?
2. The price you have mentioned for the kitchen is atleast 30-40% less than what is being quoted by the firms in the market. Are we being taken for a ride or have you excluded the profit margins that these firms put over n above the material n labour costs.
Would be great if u can help me out here as I need to finalise my kitchen in the coming weeks.

@Pooja: The material used is Laminate…if you use it "right" it gives a finish as good as membrane or Veneer at a lesser cost.
@Celina: Good that you are not facing any issues & hope it remains that way…you probably are very good at maintenence & upkeep. Whatever the make, particle board in kitchens does not stand up to "regular" use & is therefore not recommended.
Cannot comment on the prices without knowing the details.

Hi Nandita we have a white kitchen with aqua blue tiles and black granite. I see that you have put wood coloured shutters above the kitchen to hide the chimney pipe etc…what coloured shutters would match with blue tiles and what material should we use?

Theoretical answer: Use the colour wheel to decide – go to http://colorschemedesigner.com
Practical answer: Keep samples of the laminate next to the blue in your kitchen and choose the one you like.
Material recommended is Marine Ply with Laminate

Priyanka – The glass shutters are in an aluminium frame – it is more expensive than membrane.

Hi Nandita,
Good to see your works and your valuable suggestions. They are quite handy and practical.
Keeping the cost and the simplicity in mind(in terms of using the least amount wood) I want to have some suggestions from you.
For the lower kitchen cabinets, if I want to arrange simply the racks using simple kadapa stone slabs supported by minimum possible wooden frames and cover the same with ply wood board doors laminated with white (or some other appropriate color) sunmica (good old sunmica) what are the draw backs you see and what's cost impact do you see ? Do you support this idea at all? If not, do you have any alternate suggestions for a low cost and yet functional arrangement? I know such an arrangement may not look all that jazzy but some times simplicity in itself proves brilliant and aesthetic and I believe in it.
Anonymous – Apologies for responding late. The only issue with your idea above is that the shutters will be built on a wooden frame. Such frames have a low lasting value and with regular use may start to come off in 2 – 3 years

Textured MDF can be polished or painted…the type of polish or paint will be determined by the design.
Nowadays most large plywood retailers keep these.

Its not prohibitively expensive….it come as stickable LED strips/ tape. Most Electrical shops stock these nowadays. You need to plan for an electrical connection preferably behind the top cabinet.

Size of sliding doors is constrained by weight and not the width. The weight inturn is limited by the specification of the Hardware you buy.
Any Laminate that appeals to your personal taste should be ok
Metallic edges are for visual appeal also double up as handles
No handles for lofts – some secrets should remain the way they are 🙂 – btw its not very difficult to figure out.

Need a small suggestion from you. The Wall Panel of TV unit should be of dark colour or light colour (if we are using 2 colours like the one in your design above drawers – lighter than wall panel colour.) Thanks in adv.
Colours need to be decided based on the scheme for the entire room & the furniture and not just a single unit

we r planning to so the kitchen in our flat.
Is laminated marine ply 16 mm and 6mm boxwork,19mm post form shutters a good option for the kitchen?
What I understood from the question is
Box/ Carcass in 16MM Ply laminated on both sides = 18mm finished thickness
19MM Post Form Shutters in Plywood
From a durability perspective the above is fine. Personally I am not a big fan of postformed shutters because of the look – however tastes differ from person to person.

It is possible & there are multiple options available, easiest would be to use glossy laminate. Please visit the ply/ laminate shops to check out.

Hi Nandita, Very informative post. I need one advice from you. If I use Glass countertop for my crockery unit, under that coloured stone see through. What will be the problems i would be facing in regular use. What should be thickness & quality grade for glass countertops.
