A number of folks have been inquiring on what material works best for the kitchen slab. This decision has lately become more complicated due to the different variety available in the market and whether the newer materials available suit our desi style of cooking & handling.
To answer this question lets look at each of the materials available and the pros & Cons of each
1. Good Old Granite:
————————————————————–
By far the most popular choice, and not without reason. Granite is more or less scratch & stain proof. The only draw back with Granite is the limitation on the colours & shades available. If you are ok with the Henry Ford philosophy of “You can choose any colour as long as its black” then this is the best material for you. One would argue that granite does come in other colours, however my personal view is that the other colours in granite do not give as good a finish & look compared to black granite or the other materials (below). Approx price range 100 – 700 per square foot (some imported one do cost the sky)
2. Corian (Acrylic Solid Surface)
————————————————————–
The most hotly debated material. By the way – did you know that while Corian is generally used as a family name for all types of acrylic solid surfaces for countertops it is actually a brand name owned by Du Pont (Much like how we assume the name “Surf ” to mean any kind of washing powder). Acrylic countertops in Bangalore are available from Dupont (Corian), Merino (Hanex) & LG (Himacs). The great thing about Acrylic solid surface is that it can be shaped as per one’s requirement, hence giving a lot of flexibility to the designer. Also the finishes & edges are clean & slick. The only thing that goes against Acrylic surfaces is that they are prone to scratches & stains….these can however be removed by “rebuffing” the surface. Contrary to usual belief, Acrylic Surfaces are extremely resistant to heat (do not melt). To prove this to myself I actually brought a small piece of the material home and experimented with all kinds of things. The poor piece of Acrylic (this one is Hanex) you see in the picture below has hosted
Acrylic Counter top Material/ Corian – Under Test |
1. A hot pressure cooker right out of the flame
2. A kadhai fuming with hot oil and
3. Knife cuts from daily vegetable chopping
Well, except for the scratches, it did hold up to tell its story.
The other good thing about Acrylic is that it comes in a range of colours including Shocking white (my favourite). On the price front Acrylic will set you off by over Rupees 800 per square foot, so u need to have a strong heart and a loving husband to go with it.
3. Marble:
—————————————————————-
Italian Marble Counter top |
Apart from the Rajasthani White (Makarana) Marble you have Italian marble widely available in Bangalore. It comes in a variety of very rich colours. The challenge in using Marble is that (1) You need to buy the whole sheet – so if you don’t do your maths right then you may end up wasting quite a bit (2) Marble is brittle – you need a very good workman to cut & lay the sheet and (3) Not all types of Marble are stain & scratch resistance, hence you need to choose carefully. However if “Managed” well Marble can give a very distinct look. For the record…I myself have used Marble in my kitchen (see the pic) and contrary to the popular belief that Marble is not suited for Kitchen Counter tops I kind of am satisfied with it. What you need to know however is that it does require a bit of maintenance and kindly use – not as much as a ” Fill it, shut it, forget it” (remember the old Hero Honda ad) type like granite. Price Point – Rupees 350 psft and above.
4. Quartz – Artificial Stone:
——————————————————————-
Quartz Kitchen Counter Top |
This is a fairly new addition to the family of materials for counter tops. I was frankly a little skeptical before using this when one of my customers insisted but its been around one year (see the pic) and so far the customer is not complaining. I really would not mind using this again. Quartz stands good in all aspects such as scratch & stain resistance, easy workmanship, slick finishes & availability in a range of colours. Price Point – Rs 500 psft and above
There are other options available like Laminate on wood etc however I do not feel that these stand up the exacting standards for Indian cooking and these are definitely NOT Indian MAID Proof 🙂
That’s it for now I guess, that one was quite a marathon …have not typed sooo much in a long time and to those of you who have had the patience of reading till this very line…a big thank you & hope this helps you in your own Marathon of home making. As always would welcome any bouquets & brickbats

Hi Nandita ,
I was wondering if it is always necessary to have an electrical point to operate the hob. Can't we do without the electrical hob and get a gas hob installed instead.
The electrical point is for the ignition system.

Hi Nandita,
Am little confused about the order in which the kitchen countertop has to be done – should we get the countertop fixed with the support of some brick legs and then do the woodwork under-neath or have the woodwork done and then get the granite slab fixed.
Have got different suggestions about this and not sure which is the correct one. It will help further if you can list the pros and cons of both.
The slab will rest on the bottom unit wooden boxes. No additional civil work/ support is needed

Hi Nandita,
Probably I am the millionth here to applaud about this blog. Thanks for all your time.
My builder has provisioned a cement slab to hold the weight of Granite counter top…Damn!!!. From your blogs I learnt that most of the Modular kitchen counter tops are supported by Marine ply or any other type ply instead of cement. Is there any con's in having this cement support? Should I have to remove the cement support to save on space and provision CARCASS?
Can the modular kitchen still be designed to perfection avoiding dust and uninvited guests (Cockroaches….)possibly between ply and cement slab.?
Also When I see the your kitchen works. I see the overhead cabinets are sitting on top of the tiles. Are they really sitting on top of the tiles? How did you manage the space between the tiles and the box itself?
Your suggestions are much appreciated.

Prabhu
Hi Nandita,
Can you please tell me some shops in bangalore where i can get corian top. I am thinking of having corian top dining table…though still thinking if it will be a good idea…as it can get scratch easily…
You can try at Rankas or Razzle on RV road

Crevices & cockroaches can be managed with silicone & pest control however you will not get a 100% slick finish with the cement counter underneath…if you are the finicky kinds then remove the cement slab.
In my kitchens the wall cabinets are not on top of the tiles, the tiling has been done so that it fits exactly within the space for the backsplash.

HI Nadita,
What is your suggestion about complete PVC based kitchen. Right from CARCASS to cabinets..etc. Is it durable, Heat resistant? Have you ever had a chance to work on such a project?
I heard PVC based kitchens are half the cost of wood based kitchen. However I doubt the durability, heat resistance. Of course everything comes with its own price.:)
Appreciate your response.
The PVC options that I have seen till date look quite cheap and dont give a finish that is up to the mark (except in the case of UPVC windows & frames). There may however be something new around UPVC for Kitchens & Interiors that I am not aware of.

Can u please help out the best distributor for quartz slabs.
Nandita,
Need your views on the following. My kitchen is 50 sqft including back splash and front moulding
1. Acrylic solid surface (such as Corian, Hi Macs) – 700 psqft + 180 installation psft comes to about 48,000 including installation
2. Granite – Comes at about Rs 200 psqft + installation charges – Expect this to come around 15k
3. Artficial Granite – What's your views on this material? It looks decent with a better shades than granite.
How would you rate this from a durability, stain and scratch standpoint?
thanks,
Hari
Artificial granite is fine to use. While it is not as stain proof as Granite but if used with a little love and care it wok out fine.

Try the shops at marble market on Bannerghatta road – ask for quartz or artificial granite (sometimes they may not understand "quartz")
Rgds

Nandita,
Actually, I learnt after visiting the store that by Artificial Granite, they are referring to Quartz. I see from your earlier post that you were skeptical. What is your opinion after 2 years of writing this post.
Also, here is what I learnt from the dealer
1. Quartz is hard surface, second to diamond. Bottom line, I guess they were trying to say its strong and can hold up heat.
2. Stain resistant and easy to clean. Has given me a sample piece to play around by applying turmeric powder, lime juice etc.. to observe the stain and clean.
Since Corian (and other acrylic surfaces) are out of my budget, I am considering going for the Quartz – kindaa like it's look too. Thoughts?
Hi Nandita,
Came across this article during my search for a white kitchen counter top. Thanks very much for elaborating on the strengths of each, and also the price points. I am keen to go for a shocking white counter top, and would like your views on which of the above mentioned materials come in this color? I understand Corian does. Any other material?
Also, you mentioned that artificial granite is prone to staining more than natural granite..I was told otherwise!
Thanks and best regards,
Ashwin
Quartz, especially the light shades and the ones available in India/ Bangalore is likely to stain – one of the reasons is due of the light shades that most people prefer in quartz & the stain being more visible in the same (when one buys granite there is only the dark shades to choose from). Also in quartz the joints tend to accumulate dust and blacken out in the long run. At the same time if one is keen on a light colour countertop then despite the above issues it is a good enough surface to go with.

See the discussion just above – it has answers to the question you have raised
Shocking white is only available in solid surfaces (Corian/ Hanex, LG)

NM, superb research and detailing! Can't thank you enough. Am presently renovating our 30 year old house, and kitchen. Was searching for Corian since mine is going to be a white kitchen, when I bumped into your blog. OK, here is my problem. I am obsessed with the idea of doing my backyard in terracotta tiles, specifically in herringbone pattern ( courtesy all the time spent in looking at those lovely pics on houzz, bhg, apartmenttherapy etc etc). Its a large open space and am not too keen on making a garden since I know iam not going to maintain it. Firstly, do you think its a good idea? Will terracotta retain its quality ( like they sow in the pics)? Secondly, where on earth( rather Bangalore) will I find skilled labour for my precious herringbone pattern? personally would love white herringbone floor in the kitchen as well, but…???
Waiting for your reply!
Aparna
You cannot use Terracota itself for exterior flooring since it has high moisture absorption and accumulates dust due to its texture. However regular exterior grade floor tiles in terracota finish are available in the market. You may use these. Any good tile layer will be able to do the herringbone design – you may check with the place from where you buy the tiles.

Hi Nandita,
I am based in Delhi and want to go in for a modular kitchen. One dealer is giving me a combination of Hettich and Inox drawers and hinges with Faber/ Kaff appliances. The other is giving me Blum / Grass fittings with appliances from Bosch. Which is a better combination? Both will cost me around 5.5 lakhs
How does Grass compare with Hettich fittings.?
How do Bosch appliances( chimney, hob, dishwasher, oven and microwave compare with Faber/ kaff?
Both options are similar. The only thing you should check is the feedback on the after sales service of Bosch, Kaff/ Faber in your area and decide accordingly
Hi Nandita,
Thanks for taking out time for writing such a informative article on countertops. I wanted your suggestion on acrylic solid surfaces for countertops, which is better DuPont vs LG? Also, is light color acrylic solid surface durable for countertop?

Hi Nandita,
What do you suggest for kitchen sink. I am very inclined towards getting a quartz unlike the general norm of Stainless Steel. Please suggest and also suggest an affordable brand.
Regards,
Arpitha
Great Article and very informative. It would be great if the readers can pay a visit to http://www.artigra.com .
Our product is about 40-50% cheaper than Corian plus we have a full fledged setup in Bangalore.
Thanks Nandita for the insight on countertops. My apartment in Bangalore is just about to reach handover stage. As per our agreement the builder had mentioned Quartz counter with marble verticals . However they have provided Italian marble counter instead. Do you think I should insist on Quartz and not settled for Marble?
Also, I am replacing the single bowl SS sink provided by the builder with double bowl with drain board. Any suggestions or pointers to choose the right one…
Can you let me know if its ok to go with kitchen baskets with blend of Aluminum and stainless steel rather than just SS Steel ones? If yes any idea which company will be better.. I am getting options like EuroStyle and Pearl in local market here
Quartz sinks are available, however these are not very popular due to their hi costs. I would not recommend going for a cheap brand for these as stone sinks in general are prone to cracks.

If you like to colour and the finish then Marble is fine. For the sink you may check ones from Franke, Futura or Hindware.

Glass countertop is not recommended – it develops scratches as well is prone to crack in case of an accident. If you need a white countertop then suggest you try solid surfaces from Corian, LG Himacs or Hanex or go with Quartz.

Hi Nandita,
We are looking for a material for kitchen counter-top which is 20-24 mm thick and is light shade(preferably plain) as our wood work is dark brown.
What material to go for? Scratch resistance and hygiene(easy to maintain) is the key. Also please suggest some good dealer in Sarjapur Haralur Road area. Also a rough idea of cost would also to help. Any other key aspects to consider while making a choice?
The options are already in the post above. You may not get too many options above 19/20mm – nor is this much thickness needed.
There are some Granite/ Marble dealers on Sarjapur road before Decathlon

Hello Miss Nandita, Greetings.
Just like any other reader and researcher, I came across your blog.thank you for the detailed information. I also went through all the questions and answers to know if someone has posted a similar query like me.
My question is about Nano Glass / Glass white as locally called by dealers. I did read you mentioned about not being nice for kitchen as its not scratch resistant.
However can you elaborate more on its disadvantages? Because the dealers and lot of other articles are talking about it being similarl strong as granite, does not crack so easily unless a heavy stone falls on kitchen counter top, doesn't catch stains, tried turmeric myself for few minutes on a small piece. Also it is cheaper than corian and gives a very high gloss sleek look. Was surprised vendors promoting glass white more than corian even though they know they can make more money if I buy corian. Would you please help me before I take any decision as to why I shouldn't go for Nano Glass / Glass white. Thank you for your time and peacefully replying to all. Best Regards.
Though it is as hard as granite Nano Glass is brittle and cracks when hit with a sharp object – similar to glass. Also it develops scratches that cannot be removed by buffing (unlike Corian). People are using it for counter tops, mainly for the bathroom, however I do not recommend it

Hi Nandita,
Your blog is very very informative and is one stop blog for entire home design.
I have a question, is it recommend to change granite top to quartz with regard to durability and maintenance. and even pricing.?
My builder already placed granite in my kitchen, is there any shop in Bangalore (near electronic city or so) who will exchange the old granite with new granite/quartz?
Thanks in advance.
The change over to Quartz is justified for ergonomic reasons and not for durability and maintenance since Granite fares better on the maintenance/ durability front.
I dont know of anyone who wil lbe able to exchange, I guess you will need to trash the old granite slab or give it away to the roadside granite fabricators who may pay a small amount for it.

please suggest me which material is best for countertop. In the shop, they told me artificial granite is trend nowadays which is prepared by granite powder and is also good for durability, maintenance and also has many different colours in it. Is this artificial granite means quartz? Should I go for it? In granite, they told me that nowadays pure black granite does not come. You will get black granite but that will not be pure black. I am confused, should I go for white colored artificial granite which u mean is quartz?
Artificial granite is not Quartz, it is factory made artificial stone. It does come in different and nice colours. I have not used it still hence cannot comment but do plan to use in in my next project and will know soon. Black Granite is available – visit the granite/ marble market and you will get it. If you are looking for white and are able to maintain then solid surfaces (Hanex, LG or Corian) is an option that you can look at – this is different from artificial stone.

hi thanks a lot for information, i got my kitchen done in last month with Corian top , but it has got crack near hob within a month i am very upset cause of this what do you think why it has cracked? my designer says he will put one more sheet on it, should i allow him to do it?
what is thickness of Acrylic sheet used normally for kitchen?
you say its heat resistant but i get smell of chemical when i keep hot pot on it
and also please can you let me know running rate of it
i would appreciate your answer thank you in advance
Corian or any other solid surface from a reputed manufacturer will not crack. Only physical damage (something heavy falling on it) or poor fabrication can result in a crack.
I have tested Hanex (another brand of Solid Surface and equivalent to Corian) with a hot cooker as well as a frying pan right off the gas stove – it does not give any kind of smell.
Corian would cost no less than Rs 600 psft for a 14mm sheet ++ fabrication.
Putting another sheet on top is an option but you will have to see how that affects the look of the edge and the overall height of the Kitchen. Corian can actually be repaired quite easily and post rebuffing the crack would not even show. I would however recommend that you first check whether the product used is actually Corian.

Hi Nandita,
Your blog is precise, simple yet conveys relevant technical info to laymen for their home design. Thanks a lot.
We are designing our kitchen for a new flat. For the kitchen countertop we wish to go for Quartz which is Marble lookalike. Have been through some popular brands like Kalinga/Gravaa/AGL. Also had thoughts of Natural Marble – Indian/Italian never mind the costing. Your suggestions on any particular marble quality (like carara, etc) in lighter colors to look for. So as to be suitable for countertop. I have availability of good tile workmanship.
Thanks, If cost is not a constraint then I would recommend using quartz (it really is an artificial stone composite containing quartz). In Bangalore quartz is available from Kalinga Stone, Johnson and Hafele…there may be other brands as well
If it is pure white you are looking for then Hanex or Corian solid surface is a good option as well.

Hello !I am new to this blog.Plan to renovate my kitchen .At present it is semi modular and the wood work rests under a 3.5 inch cement slab with a black graanite slab over it .It is an open u shaped kitchen approximately 10' X 8'.5".
The vendors I hired tell me I have to break the concrete slab with the granite to get a new finish.
However some who have just a granie slab and woodwork under the slab say that water seeps directly on to the woodwork at times.Don't know what to do kindly guide. Also under the slabs I have 3 pillars 2 facing each other to partition the area under sink and one at the end of the counter.

Hi Nandita!!/
Thanks for the informative blog. I have a query ? how should the extended counter top be supported ? Do I need to get plywood underneath or brackets ,cobbles etc .? Please advise..
Depends on the span of the cantilever. In any case it will need support of a plywood below. If the span is over 2 feet then a pillar or a bracket will be needed.
which brand of quartz Kalingastone, AGL, Johnson, hafele is better and economical too.
Thanks Nandita for the informative blog!
Could you please suggest some shops to buy granite for kitchen and at a reasonable rate? Also, do these shops cut and polish the granite slabs?
Please try the granite shops around the Marble Market on Bannerghatta road. Some of them do offer finishing services as well.
All are the same.
HI Nandita..the blog is quite informative. I have the strong heart and being a loving husband to my wife I have gone for the acrylic Kitchen counter top. Fabricators are linked with the dealers of the material. Hence please contact the dealer of the brand that you have used and he will be able to send you a fabricator
Hi Nandita,
Thank you for the informative article.
I am renovating my kitchen and looking at getting a quartz countertop. In Noida I am getting kalinga, Johnson and AGL. However, there is a huge price difference between them with Kalinga being the most expensive at Rs 500+ and AGL most economical at within 300/sf. Any idea why the huge price difference when they're all quite similar.
I have got samples for kalinga and agl to test and so far neither have failed the turmeric, heat and oil test. So I am thoroughly confused.
Please help.
Regards.
Kalinga, AGL & Johnson are all standard and equivalent brands for Quartz counter tops. If you are getting your choice of colour in AGL and at a competitive rate then you should just go for it
Thank you so much Nandita.
Is quartz also called as super Nano Glass ?
No, nano glass is a 19mm glass sheet that comes in different colours. It is suited for Bathrooms and not for the Kitchen as nano glass is brittle and can crack on impact
I want a white countertop for my white kitchen.I am confused between corian and caesarstone though I love the seamless look of corian.Which of the two is more durable and heat resistant? If I choose corian what precautions do I need to take?
I would recommend Caesarstone over Corian as it has a richer look and is low maintenance.
Corian will develop scratches over time and will need to be rebuffed once every 2 to 3 years. In addition with Corian you will need to be careful with Haldi etc as it does get stained
Hi Nandita.. I am confused between a dark colored imported granite(blue pearl/emerald pearl to be precise) and dark colored quartz. which one is preferable. thanks
Quartz will be a safer bet…I am somehow never convinced when stuff is tagged as "imported" 🙂
I would like to know whether Nanowhite resist scratch and stains, Is it a right option
Nanowhite in glass – Not Recomended
In Acrylic Solid Surface – Is OK but will need high maintenance as Solid Surfaces tend to get stained / scratched if not maintained
In Engineered Stone or Quartz: Ok to use
Please provide feedback on stain resistance capacity of Quartz, I have heard that tea/cofee stains do not go.
Stain resistance of quartz is not as good as that of granite. If the spill is washed immediately then it will not stain the quartz, however if it is wiped off after some time then the stain is likely to last.
Nandita,
Will local India. Quartz like AGL , Johnson or kalingastone are also good options in quartz. How is their durability. Or do we have to go with Dupont quartz only? Dupont quartz are very expensive please suggest if we can go for local indian brands as well
Yes, the local Indian brands are fine too.
We are trying to decide between granite and quartz. One dealer said that ligher colour granite tends to stain and absorbs oil more compared to darker granite. Is that true?
Also, AGL Quartz appears to be much cheaper than Kalinga. Is AGL also known for good quality/reliability?
What are the typical installation charges for Granite and Quartz counter tops? Is it also on a per sq ft basis or is it a fixed amount? We have a large kitchen with around 15 rft counter top and wanted to understand what the typical installation prices were, as labour charge seems to be around 30-40% of counter top itself!
It is best to go with lump-sum rates for countertop installation
AGL quality is fine. On lighter granite the stains will show compared to that on the darker granite. The absorption will more or less be the same. In general stains on granite can be washed out … it may take some effort but will ultimately go off
What is the recommended thickness for quartz and granite for kitchen countertops?
18 or 19 mm
is Steel counter tops best option ?
Not really. Good quality steel countertops are hardly available in India. Also Steel countertops are usually used in Commercial Kitchens and not in residential ones
Hi Madam,
I am planning to use a Lacquered Glass as a Backsplash to my White Quartz countertop. However, I am hearing mixed reviews about lacquered glass as a backsplash material . It would be really helpful if you could please provide your valuable advice about my idea and also please share the right material if Lacquered glass is a bad backsplash idea.
Thanks & Regards
If you have an ornamental Kitchen – that is if you don’t use your kitchen much and it just needs to look good then a Lacquered Glass backsplash would suffice. If you have a regular use family kitchen then maintaining lacquered glass will not be easy. Easiest is to go with regular tiles and there are many options, colours and finishes available in the same. Nowadays options in stainless steel for backsplash are also available – however that has to go with your overall colour scheme planned
Will the heat from our traditional gas stove placed on a quartz counter top damage or discolour it? What precautions should we take if using quartz as there is very less gap between the modern gas stoves and countertop these days?
Quartz will not get damaged or discoloured by heat. It has fairly good heat tolerance, nearly as good as granite. You can use it without worries
Hi Nandita,
The builder has already done the 3.5″ cement skirting in my new 3bhk apartment, to hide the drain outlet pipe from the sink a/c to him. Now we have to fix the granite top. My father in law in insisting on 40mm thk granite top and then we ll ask the carpenter to do the modular (no legs though) kitchen. My queries are:
1. Is 40mm thk granite slab ok with brick wall support below? What to do for nosing?please tell the pros and cons of using 40mm thk granite.
2. What is the minimum space I should give the carpenter for cabinets(he is telling he ll fix the granite top at 33″ from floor, and also we have a 3.5″ cement skirting below, so left with around 29.3″ I guess, is it enough for the tandem boxes, and so on?? Also what is the height required for a dishwasher?
3. What is your opinion of using say 8mm granite for backsplash?
4. Which is better? Single Bowl or with drainboard?
Kindly help by giving your valuable inputs
Thanks a ton….
My responses are inline below
1. Is 40mm thk granite slab ok with brick wall support below? What to do for nosing?please tell the pros and cons of using 40mm thk granite.
NM: 40mm thick is fine, however very few options are available in 40mm. In Addition 40mm granite will be very heavy and adds no beneficial value. If you need a thicker edge you can have a thin granite piece pasted just at the edge / nosing and the rest of it can be regular 19 mm.

NM: The counter height has to be between 32 to 35 inches from the floor. The dishwasher will need a free height of 800mm (32 Inches). With the skirting at the bottom the dishwasher will not fit. Tandem boxes are flexible and the height if 29.3 inches is fine
3. What is your opinion of using say 8mm granite for backsplash?
NM: No – Granite as the backsplash will look too heavy and too much of stone everywhere
4. Which is better? Single Bowl or with drainboard?
NM I would recommend having at least one with a drain board (either in the kitchen or in the utility – the one that will be used heavily)
Stumbled upon this beautiful article while researching countertops for my kitchen. We are typical users of kitchen and keep a lot of hot items directly on the countertops. Also very heavy users of turmeric and masalas with bout of spilling. Do you advise white/light countertops from quartz? is it scratch/stain/heat proof? we are hearing different stories from different sides. Please help
Quartz can handle hot surfaces, it will even take vessels transferred direct from flame. However stain resistance will be a bit of a concern especially with white quartz. You will need to ensure that any spills are cleaned off immediately. Just in case the slab gets a stain then regular wash with soap water should see it off in a few days. Permanent stains are improbable.
Hi Nandita, I came across your article while looking for kitchen countertops. I am evaluating between kalinga stone and AGL quartz. Considering Kalinga is more expensive than AGL, is it worth going for it as most dealers deal with AGL and very few with kalinga. Please advise. Thank you.
Ankit,
Both AGL & Kalinga Stone are fine. Choose based on the design that you like. The stone would hardly need any after sales service hence it would not matter how many dealers are dealing in each.
