Sliding Wardrobe with regular shutters

Hi,
For sliding wardrobe doors our carpenter is using wood with different thicknesses. Could you help us in understanding if this is correct way of doing.
On top and bottom of the door he is using MDF with 8 inch thickness. In between he is using 11 inch thick 6 ply wood pieces. 4, along the edges and 2 in a cross shape, covering four corners. On completion it is looking like a door made of single wood. Each door is 3.1 feet long. It's a 4 door wardrobe.
He says this thickness is required to support sliding fitting. We are bit confused as it will be hollow in centre.
Is this correct way of doing??

Thanks in advance!!
