False ceiling to do or not to do

abirami posted 6 years ago

Hi,
We have recently completed the interior decor work in our new home. We have kept it minimal and maintained a rustic theme. We also plan to accent the theme by throwing in some raw finish industrial lamps for ceilings and walls. We plan not to do a false ceiling.
We have done a natural brick finish wall cladding in the living room. We thought that adding a false ceiling would simply give an artificial look. The room looks spacious and has a high ceiling and plenty of natural lights with full length windows. So adding a false ceiling would cut down a few inches in the room height which I really did not want. But everyone around has done false ceiling and keep asking us to do telling that, not doing it would only leave the interior decor looking incomplete.
My questions -
Can i not simply drop the idea of false ceiling and use wall lights and ceiling lights instead and still not compromise on the natural light? Will skipping false ceiling make the interior decor look incomplete?
We plan to add an accent wall in the living room with textured paint or a vibrant color. Are there other ways to shift focus from the ceiling?
What are the othe ideas to decorate or perhaps accent the ceiling without adding any artificial touch to the room and while also retaining the natural white look?

I would be against adding a false ceiling just for the sake of having it. The main purpose of a false ceiling is to accentuate the lighting and it is not a decor requirement in itself - unless of course you plan to do some carvings/ paintings on the ceiling...seldom done in homes (more in commercial spaces, temples etc.).
Since you have a high ceiling you may use a combination of hanging lights, chandeliers, wall lamps and floor lamps for the lighting.
If you are using a light shade of paint on the walls, you may continue the same colour on the ceiling, instead of making the ceiling white. This will increase the general warmth of the place.
